Convolution using intermediate variables

Hi,
Here is another general question that I would like to see some discussion on.

Many of us have at some time or other used or planned to use an intermediate variable to model a variable that cannot be observed by plant testing. In most cases one gets a feel of what is the best intermediate variable for that situation.

(a) What would be the best practices in choosing and using intermediate variables that would be of interest to the community at large.

(b) How can intermediate variables be used effectively when one cannot collect the actual data in "plant test mode" e.g. during severe disturbances when it may not be possible to keep the critical loops not cascaded.
